Book Discussion - "Israel: What Went Wrong?"

  • Ner Shalom Courtyard 85 La Plaza Cotati, CA, 94931 United States (map)

Ner Shalom’s Israel-Palestine Committee and Beit Midrash sponsor a discussion of Omer Bartov’s important new book.

The book is available in print at Copperfields and elsewhere and also available as an ebook.

We do ask that you read the book or watch Omer Bartov’s lecture of the same title before our discussion. Here is the link to the lecture as given at Sonoma State's Holocaust and Genocide Lecture Series in May:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLQRijvgk84

Omer Bartov is an Israeli-American historian and renowned scholar of the Holocaust and genocide. Shortly before the Hamas attack of the 7th of October 2023, Bartov, together with other Jewish historians, connected the judicial crisis in Israel with Israel’s occupation of millions of Palestinians in the West Bank who lacked almost all basic rights, and they advocated for an end of occupation. During Israel’s reprisal in Gaza, Bartov published a series of illuminating essays on this deeper crisis, and his work of analysis and accountability has culminated in Israel: What Went Wrong?

Bev Voloshin will provide an introduction to the book and help lead the discussion. Bev has taught for several semesters at one of the Palestinian universities, and thus she was in East Jerusalem and the occupied Palestinian territory (the West Bank) on 7 October 2023. She has been involved for many years in the Israeli-Palestinian peace movement and is a past chair of the board of a humanitarian NGO that works in Gaza and the oPt.
