News from Dor Hadash

Shalom Chevre,
Happy New Year for the Trees! It time to plant a tree. Tu B'shvat will be celebrated by Dor Hadash on Sunday, February 4 at 10:00 am. As in the past 5 years, we will be having an update from about the restoration and health of Cotati Creek. Then we will walk to the creek, with gloves, garbage bags and shovels in order to clean up the creek area and plant new seedlings. The confirmation class will not be coming with us to the creek because they will continue their film class with Rabbi Elisheva.

Families are invited to join us for this tikkun olam event. We will be back to the synagogue by 12:15 in order to have a tefillah service and share the fruits of the season from the 7 species.

Does your child want to go to a sleep-away camp this summer? It is time to sign up for Jewish Summer Camps! The Bureau of Jewish Education has scholarship money available to families who want their children to go to camp, and who find the cost to be limiting. I received a scholarship last year for my son to go on a 12-day Quest with Camp Tawonga. He had a remarkable experience, the process of receiving a scholarship was not overwhelming, and I am happy to help anyone in our congregation go through the hoops to get their child to a summer camp program. I have also worked extensively with both Camp Newman and Camp Tawonga, and I am happy to discuss both programs with you. Camp RJF ( Reconstructionist Movement) also has a summer camp program that I have information about.

I am in correspondence with the Islamic society, trying to find a venue for us to come together with their congregational families.

Dor Hadash will not meet on February 11 because of the President's Holiday weekend. We do have school February 4, 18, and 25.

La'hitraot v' shalom, Leslie

"The most direct means for attaching ourselves to G-d from this material world is through music and song. Even if you can't sing well, sing. Sing to yourself. Sing in the privacy of your own home. But sing."
Rabbi Nachman of Bratslav

Dor Hadash is supported by our community, and by a generous grant from Sinai Memorial Chapel.

eScrip and more...

Do you need new tires or more for your vehicle? If you do, than check out the participating merchants in the eScrip (two are Big O Tires and Pep Boys) www.eScrip.com and Communitysmart (such as McLea's Tire) www.communitysmart.com programs. All it takes is having work done at one of these merchants and then when you go to pay for it present your Communitysmart card or use your credit/debit card linked with eScrip. Its so easy to make your vehicle safe and provide a donation to your community.
eScrip shoppers please make sure you keep your credit/debit cards up to date. Just go on-line to www.eScrip.com and check out "my escrip" to see what your expiration dates and card numbers are on their records.

Oliver's and about 9 other markets belong to the Communitysmart Card program. Oliver's shoppers please note this major change!! To join this program you can: instantly join by asking for a card at Oliver's checkout counter; call COMMUNITYsmart at 568-4995 or go on-line to www.communitysmart.com. When you check out at one of the participating merchants, you slide your Communitysmart card just like a debit card to get credit for your transaction. This program requires that a certain minimum be spent but then we receive a greater rebate (for Oliver's you need to spend $25 for a rebate of 5%).

Albertson's shoppers can participate by connecting your blue and white Preferred Savers card to Ner Shalom by going to www.Albertsons. com or using a tan and white Community Partners card Anna can provide you.

Raley's users just need to obtain a Raley's partner's card from Anna and activate it through their website (Raleys.com). Using the card without activating it for Ner Shalom will leave those rebates in suspense.

Not sure where you stand with all these programs? Give Anna Ghandour a call at 584- 4829 or e-mail her at huskyanna@yahoo.com and let her help you make a difference today.

OPEN YOUR HEART TO A WAITING CHILD

Sonoma County has a growing number of children and youth whose families are unable to meet their physical and/or emotional needs. At the same time, we have a serious shortage of caring foster families willing and able to provide safe, loving homes for children and teens, including those approaching adulthood.

Foster parents are needed for children and youth of all ages and ethnic backgrounds. Both short and long- term homes are being recruited. We particularly need people who are willing and able to care for siblings, and for children who may return home to their parents.

Both couples and single people may become foster parents. Renters are also welcome. We pay a monthly stipend for each child, and medical and dental coverage is provided. Training and support are also provided.

Foster care information meetings are held monthly at Sonoma County Family, Youth & Children's Services. If you or someone you know is considering becoming a foster parent, please call Rita Jacobs, Foster Home Recruiter, at (707) 565-4274.

Rebuilding our Lives: Darkness to Light
Community Yom HashoaH Commemoration
The Community Yom HashoaH Commemoration this year will feature many local survivors, young people, audience participants, and new rituals to enhance the mood and inspiration of this year's theme, "Rebuilding our Lives: Darkness to Light". The Commemoration will be held on Sunday, April 15 at 2 p.m. at the Friedman Center.

Among the local survivors, Hilde Catz of Santa Rosa will share her journey from darkness to light and resolution, highlighted this past year by her visit to her hometown in Germany as part of a re-union of former Jewish residents and survivors. Her daughter and 8-year-old granddaughter were an important part of this journey back to their historic roots.

Photographer Evvy Eisen will also present her DVD, Multiply by Six Million, filmed photographic portraits of California survivors, narrating brief accounts of their experiences and how those experiences affected their sense of meaning and values.

Six survivors of death camps will again highlight the solemn ceremony of lighting the memorial candles. In addition, teens will light candles in a new ceremony this year to commemorate and pledge to remember the lessons of the ShoaH. The teen winner of the annual Susy Raful Essay Contest will read his or her reflections on the ShoaH.

Rabbi Schlesinger of Congregation Beth Ami will be officiating this year. Cantorial soloist Leira Satlof of Congregation Shomrei Torah will lead the audience in niggun and song. Fredi Bloom, cantorial soloist of Congregation B'nai Israel will perform the traditional Eli Eli and El Molei Rachamim.

A new memorial book and yellow candles to light on Erev Yom HashoaH will again be available to take home after the conclusion of the Commemoration. Those who wish to contribute names of friends or relatives lost in the ShoaH in the memorial book may obtain Registration Forms at the Jewish Community Center or at the synagogue office. Others who have submitted forms in prior years will receive a renewal notice in the mail. Please return Victim Registration Forms to the JCC office by March 10, 2007.
